Volunteer Spotlight: Order Building Fanatic Thomas

Each of our partner schools receives different food quantities depending on the number of kids enrolled in our Weekend Meal Program. In order to make sure each school gets the right food bags and quantities, Order Building Volunteers –  like Thomas – help prepare the food orders for delivery to the schools by our drivers. There’s a lot of attention to detail in this role to avoid any errors, and it can be quite the workout. It involves standing for long stretches, bending, and lifting boxes up to 30 pounds. Thank you Thomas!

Q: What’s your name and what is your volunteer role at Every Meal?

A: Hi, my name is Thomas and I’m one of the warehouse workers, the Order Builders, here at Every Meal. I started here during the beginning of the last school year, so this is my second school year here. I enjoy my time here.

Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Every Meal?

A: Well, the goal and objectives, the mission of Every Meal matches what I want to do, which is to be a hands on participant in helping to alleviate childhood food insecurity. Being able to come here let’s me see tangible results of what I’m doing and help see the food move out the door to people who need it.

Q: Do you have a family food tradition that is important to you?

A: We have a traditional one that’s important to us and it is American Thanksgiving. When I was a kid that was the time, twice a year, we went to visit all my relatives in central Pennsylvania and Thanksgiving was one of those when I would see cousins and all the people that I didn’t see the rest of the year. So I look forward to that. And I also look forward to some of the things that my grandmother and great grandmother prepared for that meal.
